About paving & patios
The base is the job
Almost every paving failure you see around Mandurah is a base failure, not a paver failure. Pavers themselves are hard-wearing and largely indifferent to weather; what moves is the ground underneath them. On sand, that means compacting properly in layers, getting the depth right for what the surface has to carry, and building in falls so water leaves rather than sits.
A driveway carrying a car needs a materially different base from a courtyard carrying a table and four chairs. Quoting the two the same way is how a driveway ends up rutted in its second summer. It is also why area alone does not determine price — the same square metreage can be two very different jobs depending on what it has to hold up.
Drainage, falls and soakwells
Sandy soil drains well until you cover it with something impermeable, at which point the water has to be told where to go. Falls need to run away from the house, not toward it, and on a block where a new paved area meaningfully increases the hard surface, a soakwell is often the right answer rather than an optional extra.
This gets missed more often than any other detail. Water pooling against a wall, or running back toward a slab, is expensive to fix afterwards and cheap to design out beforehand.
Retaining walls: limestone, block and when engineering is needed
Limestone is the local material and it suits the setting — it is what much of the ground here is made of, it weathers well, and it looks like it belongs. Concrete block is the alternative where a cleaner, more uniform face is wanted, or where the wall is doing structural work.
Height is the factor that changes everything. A low garden wall holding a bed back is straightforward. Once a wall gets taller, or once it is retaining a neighbour's ground or something is built above it, it can need engineering and approval, and the drainage behind it becomes as important as the wall itself. A retaining wall with no drainage behind it is holding back water as well as soil, and water always wins eventually.
Patios and decking
A patio is what makes a Mandurah backyard usable through summer, and the sun angle matters more than the size. West-facing outdoor areas take the full afternoon sun off the coast and need more cover than a north-facing one of the same footprint.
Decking suits a sloping site or an area stepping down from a threshold, where paving would mean either a lot of fill or a lot of excavation. Timber near the coast needs the right species and finish and a maintenance habit; composite avoids the maintenance at a higher up-front cost.

Common questions
How long does paving last?
The pavers themselves last a very long time. What determines the life of the surface is the base under them and the drainage around them — a well-prepared base on sand with correct falls will outlast a premium paver laid on a poor one. That is where the money is best spent.
Do I need a soakwell?
Often, once you are adding a meaningful area of hard surface to a sandy block. The water that used to soak straight in has to go somewhere, and directing it into a soakwell is a great deal cheaper than dealing with water pooling against a wall later. We will tell you at the measure whether your job needs one.
Does a retaining wall need engineering or approval?
It depends principally on height, on what is above and below it, and on your local authority — the footprint here covers three different councils. A low garden wall generally does not; a taller wall, one retaining a neighbour's ground, or one with a structure above it often does. We will flag it at the measure rather than after the work starts.
Limestone or concrete block for a retaining wall?
Limestone is the local material and looks it — it suits the setting and weathers into it. Block gives a cleaner, more uniform face and is often the better answer where the wall is doing structural work or where a straight modern line is wanted. Both are perfectly sound; it is mostly a question of what the rest of the yard looks like.
Can you pave right up to a new fence?
Yes, and doing both together is the sensible order — the fence posts go in before the paving comes up to them, not after. That is exactly the sort of sequencing that is easier when it is one crew rather than two contractors.
Do you do concrete as well as pavers?
Yes — concrete paths, curbing and edging are all part of what the crew does, alongside paving and soakwells.
